"Actual" torque is determined by subtracting the built-in torque values from the archwire/slot "play" inherent in any
edgewise appliance design. The illustration below lists the upper central actual torque values (in parenthesis) when using popular rectangular and square wires. As you can see, the range of available torque values is far greater than with any other straightwire prescription. Most importantly, "proportionality" ensures that the archwire expresses torque uniformly throughout the entire bracket system.
